Hello MACC.. are you at home?

1. The Selangor government action in setting up the Special Select Committee on Competence, Accountability and Transparency (SELCAT) on the 26th May 2008 is most welcome. I love to see SELCAT in action, as I believe there are many irresponsible wrong doings by the previous Selangor government. So far, it has exposes Khir Toyo and his wife involvement in spending Balkis money against the charter of the organization. It seems Khir and his entire family has bee spending Selangor Government Company’s money as if it is their own.

2. It is reported that the SELCAT committee will regulate and inspect the competence, accountability and transparency in all administrative matters of the state government and all agencies, statutory bodies, local authorities and organisations linked to or are under the administration of the state government.

3. I was analyzing what transpired concerning the family overseas trip using PNSB money. I am not shocked at this entire expose. As a former government servant, I have seen this before. I can say that this culture is rampant among the BN state government. This is actually a norm in many government companies and the state formed NGO.

4. The modus operandi is simple. The MB is usually the chairperson of the board. By virtue of being the MB, he has strong influence of the board members. He would “kowtim” few important people in the board as well as the CEO. The way this is done is by bestowing titles, land and others. Once the board is in the hand then the board will legitimize what ever request that comes in. It can be in kind of donation, study tour and others. No CEO of the State Government agency will challenge the MB or his wife. If anyone does that, that would be the end of the carrier. In the usual case, the CEO is always a docile fellow that will say “Saya menurut perintah”

5. This is a blatant abuse of power. This is a blatant abuse of position and yet I have yet to hear any statements made by MACC that they would be investigating Khir Toyo. From what is written in the online media, it appears the evidence of abuse is rock solid. There is much evidence that was documented as well as the statement taken under oath is more than enough for one to be prosecuted. The way I see, SELCAT has completed ¾ of the work that MACC needs to do.

6. Government agencies like the Police, Army and the MACC must not only appear neutral but they must show that they are truly neutral. If they failed to do so then they will lose the public support. Worldwide history has shown that the failure of the uniformed agencies to be neutral can lead to riots and chaos. It can cause government to fall. The way I see it, the failure of MACC to act will only strengthen people belief that BN needs to go. I believe the sign is already there. It appears that in the case of Khir Toyo, Zaharah Kechik , Balkis and PNSB, MACC is aiding BN downfall.
